I left for Basic Training Nov 18th 1980. Spent Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years at Lackland AFB Texas. My first Christmas away from home - age 18- we were woken up early - handed new buckets, new mops, new scrub brushes. We were told Merry Christmas - you have an hour to clean this mess up! I thought it was pretty clean already from the night before!
How appropriate to be handed a mop on Christmas Day in Basic Training. Maybe they looked at it since they were new supplies, like they were your presents? Haha. You will never forget that Christmas. And think, yes, you were there but staff and drill sergeants had to be away from their families, too.
That it is "never clean enough" mentality in the military stuck with me. I am sure it was/is to instill discipline and attention to detail, things today which I really appreciate, but at the time, not so much.
