Essex in the Korean War at the same time. Course, with over 1,000 personnel on board, they never met each other. Gail said that they came to Ohio every year for the Soap Box Derby and had this favorite restaurant they went to. Hartville Kitchen,1 mile from our house. I can only hope for it. Sadly, more and more of the population will be without any military service. What are we now? 5-10%. I believe that serving teaches you so many things that are lacking in the general population. Teamwork, deprivation, common sense..Oh well, we still have each other!!!!!!!!!!!

Ricardo Jacques said… Welcome aboard Jeff...it took till 1999 for Ricardo to see MCRD Parris Island.
We had a gathering of Marines from all over the USA.
Among our group was Pfc Raymond 'Mike' Clausen Jr. USMC Medal of Honor recipient.
During the day, it got hot, so we went to a dining facility.
As we were waiting Mike was up by the hatchway/door.
As some troops were getting close to going in.
Mike would hold the door, so they could go in.
He was wearing the Medal of Honor that we had requested him wearing.
Folks about broke their neck, when they noticed that medal.
Mike, will never be honored, by any station in the 'Crucible'.
He was the lowest rank in the Corps to become a recipient of the Medal of Honor.
His CO said he was a hand-full in the barracks.
He drank a lot and he refused to fly any mission that was not a medvac.
From what I saw that day, PI is flat and there a bit swamp.
San Diego has more mountains/hills that all seem to go up.
Never down and if it was more like a jungle.
It would have been ideal for training in northern I Corp in Vietnam.
